Chemical Energy

Below is a lesson about chemical energy. Good luck and enjoy!

Chemical energy is like a secret superpower hidden inside things, waiting to be let out!

Think of it like a bunch of tiny Lego bricks that are tightly snapped together. When you pop them apart or change how they connect, a bunch of hidden energy bursts out!

Here are three ways you see this secret superpower every day:

  • 🍔 Food: When you eat an apple, your tummy breaks down the food. It takes the hidden chemical energy out of the apple and gives it to you so you can run, jump, and play!

  • 🪵 Campfires: Wood has chemical energy stored inside it. When you safely light a match, that hidden energy turns into bright light and warm fire.

  • 🔋 Batteries: A toy car needs batteries to move. The battery keeps chemical energy trapped inside until you turn the switch on, making the toy zoom across the room!

So, chemical energy is just power that is hiding inside things until it gets a turn to wake up!

Would you like to hear a fun story about how a car uses chemical energy, or should we talk about how your favorite snack gives you energy?

🚗 How a Car Uses Chemical Energy

Imagine a car is very, very hungry. It doesn't eat apples or bananas like you do—it drinks gasoline from the gas station!

Inside that liquid gasoline, there is a lot of hidden chemical energy. It is like a giant spring pushed down tight, just waiting to pop open.

When the grown-up turns the car key, a tiny spark touches the gasoline inside the engine. Pop! The gasoline breaks apart, and all that hidden chemical energy wakes up and turns into super-strong heat and power. This power pushes the car's wheels, making the car zoom down the road!

Without that hidden chemical energy in the juice, the car would just sit still and go to sleep.

🍌 How Your Favorite Snack Gives You Energy

When you eat your favorite snack—like a sweet strawberry, a crunchy cracker, or a banana—you are putting chemical energy straight into your tummy!

Right now, that snack looks quiet, but it is actually packed with invisible energy. Once it goes down into your tummy, your body acts like a little factory. It safely breaks the snack down into tiny, microscopic pieces.

When those pieces break apart, the hidden chemical energy is released! Your body catches it and sends it all the way to your muscles. That is exactly how you get the superpower to run super fast, jump high in the air, and laugh all day long! You are literally powered by your snacks!

Coal is a special black rock that we find underground, and it is stuffed full of trapped sunshine!

Think of chemical energy like a battery pack. It is energy that is stored up and hidden away, just waiting to be used.

Here is how the trapped sunshine got inside the coal:

  • Super old plants: Millions of years ago, giant plants and trees grew under the bright sun. They soaked up the sun's light and turned it into hidden chemical energy to help them grow.

  • The big squish: When those plants died, they got buried under layers of mud and dirt. Over a very long time, the ground squished and heated them up really hard.

  • Time for magic: That heavy squishing turned the old plants into hard, black coal.

So, when we dig up coal and burn it today, that hidden chemical energy finally wakes up! It turns into hot fire and bright light, which we use to make electricity to power our toys and lights at home.

Dynamite Art --- Sept 5 2026 --- hand-drawn-kids-drawing-cartoon-illustration-dynamite-on-

Dynamite is a special stick that holds a lot of trapped energy, called chemical energy, and releases it all at once in a big BOOM!

Here is how it works, using things you already know:

🔋 What is Chemical Energy?

Think of chemical energy like a bunch of tiny, invisible coiled springs packed inside different things.

  • Food has chemical energy that helps you run and play.

  • Wood has chemical energy that turns into warm fire when it burns.

  • Dynamite has a super-strong, extra-squished version of these springs!

🧨 How Dynamite Works

Inside a stick of dynamite, there are special ingredients (chemicals) that are holding hands very tightly. They are full of trapped energy.

When someone lights the fuse, it's like shouting "Let go!"

All those chemicals instantly let go of each other and push apart as fast as they can. Because they do it all at the exact same second, that trapped chemical energy turns into heat, bright light, and a giant push of air—which makes the loud explosion!

🏗️ Why Do We Use It?

Even though it sounds scary, dynamite is a very helpful tool when used safely by experts. Because it has so much chemical energy, workers use it to blast through giant rocks to build tunnels, roads, and deep mines.

Natural gas is like a hidden superpower trapped inside the Earth, and it is full of a special kind of power called chemical energy.

Think of chemical energy like a tightly coiled spring inside a jack-in-the-box. The energy is hiding, just waiting for something to release it!

Here is how it works:

  • Where it comes from: Millions of years ago, tiny plants and bugs died and sank under the ocean. Over a very long time, dirt and rocks squished them down so hard that they turned into a trapped gas.

  • The hidden energy: That gas holds onto the sun's energy from a long time ago. This trapped power is called chemical energy.

  • How we wake it up: When we bring the gas to our homes and light a tiny match, we "pop the jack-in-the-box." The chemical energy quickly changes into heat energy and light energy.

That is why natural gas can make the fire on a kitchen stove hot enough to cook your dinner or warm up your house on a cold day!
