Reading Text: The Life of Leni Riefenstahl

Leni Riefenstahl was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1902. As a young woman, she loved dancing and acting. She starred in "mountain films," exciting movies about climbers in the Alps. In 1932, she directed her first film, The Blue Light. It was a big success and showed her talent for beautiful camera work.

Then, in the 1930s, Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. Hitler liked Riefenstahl's films and asked her to make movies for the Nazis. Her most famous work was Triumph of the Will in 1935. This film showed the Nuremberg Rally, a huge Nazi event. Riefenstahl used new techniques like moving cameras and dramatic music. Many called it a masterpiece of filmmaking, but it was really Nazi propaganda.

In 1936, she made Olympia, a two-part film about the Berlin Olympics. It celebrated athletes from around the world, but it also praised German strength. Olympia won awards and influenced sports films forever. However, after World War II, people saw her movies as tools to support the Nazis.

Riefenstahl always denied that she was a Nazi. She said she was just an artist. After the war, courts questioned her, but she was not punished much. In her later years, she took photos of the Nuba people in Sudan and filmed underwater in Africa. She lived to 101 years old and died in 2003. Today, people still argue: Was she a genius director or a propaganda maker?
