GRR

In teaching, GRR means Gradual Release of Responsibility.

It is an instructional approach in which the teacher gradually transfers responsibility for learning to the students:

  1. “I do” — Focused instruction: The teacher explains and models the skill.

  2. “We do” — Guided instruction: The teacher and students practice together.

  3. “You do together” — Collaborative learning: Students practice with classmates.

  4. “You do alone” — Independent learning: Students apply the skill independently.

The goal is to move students from teacher support toward confident, independent learning. It is also sometimes called the “I do, we do, you do” model.

In EDUC 571, OLM means the Optimal Learning Model. It is a teaching framework closely related to Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR).

The four stages are:

  1. Demonstration: The teacher explicitly models the strategy and explains their thinking.

  2. Shared demonstration: The teacher and students apply the strategy together.

  3. Guided practice: Students take greater responsibility while the teacher provides coaching and feedback.

  4. Independent practice: Students use the strategy independently in authentic work.

The main idea is that teacher support gradually decreases as student independence increases. Unlike a rigid sequence, teachers can move back and forth between stages depending on what students need.
