5th U.S. President James Monroe

James Monroe was the 5th president of the United States and is best known for the Monroe Doctrine and for being the last president in the “Virginia Dynasty.” Below is a complete, B2-friendly reading lesson you can copy and paste into a Google Doc.

Reading: James Monroe and the Virginia Dynasty

James Monroe was the fifth president of the United States and served from 1817 to 1825. He was born in Virginia in 1758 and fought in the American Revolutionary War as a young man. Before becoming president, he worked as a lawyer, a governor of Virginia, a U.S. senator, and a diplomat in Europe.

Monroe was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party, and his time in office is often called the “Era of Good Feelings” because there was little open conflict between political parties during most of his presidency. He was very popular and easily won the elections of 1816 and 1820, even facing almost no real opposition in his second campaign. During his presidency, the United States gained Florida from Spain and continued to grow westward.

Monroe was also part of what historians call the “Virginia Dynasty.” This term is used because four of the first five U.S. presidents—George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe—were from Virginia. Together, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe were close political allies who helped lead the country in its early years and shaped the young nation’s government and policies.

One of Monroe’s most important actions as president was the Monroe Doctrine, announced in 1823. In this policy, Monroe warned European nations not to try to create new colonies or interfere with the newly independent countries in Latin America and the rest of the Western Hemisphere. He also promised that the United States would not interfere in European wars or in existing European colonies in the Americas.

The Monroe Doctrine became a key part of U.S. foreign policy for many years. It showed that the United States wanted to protect its neighbors in the Americas from European control and saw the Western Hemisphere as a separate area from Europe. Today, James Monroe is remembered as the last “Founding Father” president and as a leader whose ideas about foreign policy continued to influence the United States long after his presidency ended.
