B2 : Neutered and Spayed Dogs

Below is a B2 English reading task about neutered and spayed dogs. Enjoy!

Introduction

Spaying and neutering are surgical procedures that prevent dogs from reproducing and can have health benefits for your pet:

  • Spaying

A female dog is spayed when her ovaries and uterus are removed. This prevents her from becoming pregnant. Spaying can reduce the risk of uterine infection and breast cancer.

  • Neutering

A male dog is neutered when his testicles are removed. This prevents him from breeding and reduces the risk of testicular cancer and enlarged prostate glands.

Spaying and neutering can also help reduce pet overpopulation. Feral and shelter animals often live difficult lives, and many are euthanized.

Spaying and neutering can be expensive, but the cost can be considered an investment. The cost can range from $50–$400 or more, depending on the dog's age, breed, and where you live. Low-cost clinics may be available.

A veterinarian can help you decide if spaying or neutering is right for your dog. They will consider your dog's age, breed, size, health, sex, role, personality, and home environment. Generally, it's better to wait until your dog is more mature before having the procedure.

After the procedure, your veterinarian will provide instructions for post-operative care. You should expect your dog to experience some discomfort, but your veterinarian can help control the pain

Eunuch -

A eunuch is a man or boy who has been castrated, or had their testes or external genitals removed. The word eunuch comes from the ancient Greek words eunen echein, which literally means "bed-guard".

Eunuchs have been part of court culture since the beginning of human civilization and have served many different roles throughout history:

  • Advisors: Eunuchs were often trusted advisers to monarchs and prominent officials.

  • Harem guardians: Eunuchs were often placed in charge of harems or employed as chamberlains in palaces.

  • Soldiers: Eunuchs served as soldiers.

  • Religious specialists: Some eunuchs self-castrated for religious reasons.

  • Castrato singers: Some eunuchs were castrato singers.

Eunuchs were present in the courts of many different empires, including:

  • Neo-Assyrian Empire

The earliest known court eunuchs were employed by this empire, which ruled much of present-day Iraq and Syria from the tenth through the early 7th century BCE.

  • China

Eunuchs were present in the courts of imperial dynasties from the Zhou (c. 2100–771 BCE) through the Qing (1644–1911).

  • Ottoman Empire

Eunuchs were a feature of the courts of Muslim rulers, including the Ottoman emperors.
