General & Specific nouns
A General Noun
– A noun is general when it is one of many.
– We don’t know which noun it is.
– We can’t see it
– We use a, an, and no article with general nouns
Examples:
I want a cookie.
He needs an eraser.
She likes animals.
A Specific Noun
– A specific one
– We know which one
– We can see it
– We use the with specific nouns
Examples
– The sunset is beautiful tonight.
– The bank is closed.
– The flowers are yellow.

General —> Do you need a pen?
Specific —> You can use the blue pen or the red pen.
NOTE: There are two different articles in the English language: the and a/an. The is used to describe a specific noun, whereas a/an is used to describe a more general noun. For this reason, the is also referred to as a definite article, and a/an is referred to as an indefinite article.
