3:10 – Which article do we use?

General & Specific nouns

A General Noun

– A noun is general when it is one of many.

– We don’t know which noun it is.

– We can’t see it

– We use a, an, and no article with general nouns

Examples:

I want a cookie.

He needs an eraser.

She likes animals.

A Specific Noun

– A specific one

– We know which one

– We can see it

– We use the with specific nouns

Examples

– The sunset is beautiful tonight.

– The bank is closed.

– The flowers are yellow.

4:33 – Let’s Compare General and Specific Nouns

General —> Do you need a pen?

Specific —> You can use the blue pen or the red pen.

NOTE: There are two different articles in the English language: the and a/an. The is used to describe a specific noun, whereas a/an is used to describe a more general noun. For this reason, the is also referred to as a definite article, and a/an is referred to as an indefinite article.
