Hello! My name is Professor Stephen Hawking. I was a scientist who loved asking big questions.

I wondered, “How did the universe begin?” and “What happens inside a black hole?” A black hole is a place in space with such a strong pull that even light cannot easily escape!

When I was young, my body became very weak because of an illness. I used a wheelchair to get around. Later, I used a special computer to help me speak.

Even when some things were hard, I kept learning, thinking, and sharing my ideas. I wanted people to look up at the stars and stay curious.

I believed that everyone can wonder about the universe. You can be a scientist, too—just keep asking questions!

  • I studied black holes because they are some of the most mysterious places in space. They can form when a very big star runs out of fuel and squeezes into a tiny, super-heavy spot.

  • A black hole pulls things toward it with very strong gravity. Gravity is the invisible force that keeps your feet on Earth—but a black hole’s gravity is much, much stronger!

  • A black hole is not really a giant hole you could fall through like a cave. It is a place in space that we cannot see easily, but scientists can learn about it by watching what happens around it.

What Is a Black Hole?

The Short Answer:

A black hole is an area of such immense gravity that nothing -- not even light -- can escape from it.
